Description: This 'concept album' provides an excuse to expose seven varied pieces for the ensemble, or derivatives thereof, for Quatuor pour la fin du temps, by seven composers whose lives overlapped Messiaen's. The stylistic range is enormous, from tonal/modal folk-style caprices with an eastern European Jewish flavor, to fin-de-ciècle allusions to cabaret and music hall, to eloquently elegiac lamentation, to emerging trends of the early twentieth century - impressionism and the Second Viennese School. Aside from the instrumentation the links to Messiaen are tenuous, but the program is intriguing and enjoyable. TetraGonist.
