KRZYSZTOF MEYER (b.1943): Piano Quintet, Op. 76, Piano Quartet, Op. 112*. * - World Premiere Recording.

Description: The 2009 Quartet is a concentrated 24-minute single span in the sinewy, tonal vocabulary that characterizes Meyer's music in recent years. A declamatory gesture from the piano introduces and punctuates the work's alternating passages of vehement moto perpetuo drive in rapid rhythmic unison and elegiac, strained threnody. The large, four movement Quintet is from almost two decades earlier, and traverses similar tense emotional territory, though at that point Meyer's idiom still admitted more harmonically ambiguous material, pungent dissonance and textures reminiscent of Lutosławski. The piece is classically structured, though, and firmly based in tonality, and so cogently argued as to belie its expansive duration. Piotr Salajczyk (piano), Silesian String Quartet.
