Description: Born in Venice, Blumenthal was educated both at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory there (the quasi-salon Italian songs date from this period) and, later, in Munich where his composition teacher was Rheinberger. These two quintets date from his last two years as a student, 1898 and 1899, and reveal a gift for memorable lylrical melody and for sprightly, dancing scherzos, the style quite conservative. Then, in late 1901, Blumenthal joined the ensemble of Munich’s first cabaret as composer, musical director, singer and violinist and became famous throughout German-speaking lands for the rest of his abbreviated life. Oh, and he did write a symphony too while a student in Munich... No texts. Sophie Klußmann (soprano), Oliver Triendl (piano), Daniel Giglberger, Hélène Maréchaux (violins), Corina Golomoz (viola), Bridget MacRae (cello).
