Description: The big event here is Malipiero’s nearly 35-minute almost-cantata which sets poetry by Italians from the 13th to the 17th centuries and closes with an ecstatically over-the-top paean to summer by d'Annunzio. Here we have the composer’s interest in historical Italian culture melding with more innovative techniques, the piano has significant preludes and linking sections and tension between diatonicism and chromaticism suggest a struggle in Malipiero’s creativity between light and dark. Carrillo’s 1922 work uses a vocalizing soprano and, while it’s only just over eight minutes long, it’s important for being his first composition in his microtonal Sonido 13 system. Texts and translations included. Mitsuko Shirai (soprano), Hartmut Höll (piano).
