Description: Mellits is an American composer who studied with a number of illustrious teachers all notable for resisting avant-garde trends in their own individual way. He has forged an original and highly approachable idiom from a resolutely tonal vocabulary which owes a great deal to minimalism and something to the raw energy and straightforwardness of rock and pop music. Among other contemporary ensembles, the Bang on a Can All Stars have commissioned works from him, and it is fair to say that his music fits right in with composers like David Lang and Julia Wolfe, though the minimalist he most closely resembles (though not all the time) is 1980s Glass, and if you enjoy Glass' essays for quartet you will almost certainly enjoy this. These works all comprise a series of short, contrasting movements and resemble varied, illustrative suites rather than classical quartets. An appealing personal take on post-minimalism. Quatuor Debussy.
