Description: Only the 1937 Concertante Musik is otherwise available on disc - it’s almost “Blacher’s Greatest Hit” - so this helps increase our knowledge of the composer. The Dance Suite contains music from a 1940 opera and two ballets from 1949 and 1963 which all fit together despite their stylistic variances because of the strong sense of rhythm which permeates both Blacher’s music for dance and most of his other works. Hamlet, a 12-minute symphonic poem, is interesting for being in a rather modernistic vein for 1940 yet produced no problems for the composer from Nazi cultural authorities (it’s about as avant-garde as Hindemith so don’t worry about that). The late Poème (1974) has its own dance elements (it was dedicated to a choreographer) but Blacher also shows his polyphonic skills in it. RSO Berlin; Johannes Kalitzke.
