Description: Straus’s Serenade, like his piano concerto written during his three-year period of study with Bruch (1891-4), is radiantly classical in style and the last two movements, Walzer and Alla marcia, have an elegant structure already anticipating his later operettas. The big, Romantic concerto is bolder harmonically, and is more reminiscent of Liszt (whom Bruch despised). Oliver Triendl (piano), Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern; Ernst Theis.
