WILHELM FURTWÄNGLER (1886-1954): Symphony No. 1 in B Minor.
Catalogue Number: 08X003
Reference: 555 377-2
Description: Composed between 1938 and 1941, this work releases with elemental force the energies formerly held back in the early works of the composer’s pre-World War I youth and sends them flowing into architectures of Brucknerian dimensions without the composer ever slavishly following the precedents set by the Austrian master. With this work Furtwängler, standing firmly on Late Romantic tonal ground, thoroughly acquainted with the resources of the philharmonic orchestra, slow and deliberate in his composing, introduced a triptych of symphonies that can be understood as a memorial to a bygone era. 2 CDs. Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen; Faszie Haimor.
