Description: Klenau set Rilke's then recently-published prose poem complete in 1918-19, resulting in a 71-minute work (usefully tracked into 27 sections) in three main parts: the young (fictional) Rilke's ride to war against the Turks in the Austrian army in 1663, a moody, atmospheric nocturne with both horrifying and blissful elements, and the final scene where Rilke is cut to pieces after riding his mount alone deep into the Turkish host. Klenau himself called this "future music" but it is as tonal as that of similar "avant-garde" composers like Berg, Schreker or Zemlinsky who were writing at the same end-of-war time period. The baritone sings mostly arioso, once or twice little more than sprechgesang. The music is richly orchestrated and evokes the changing moods of the poet's language effectively; at times the effect is almost operatic, at others more intimate but always dramatic. German-English texts. Bo Skovhus (baritone), Czech Philharmonic Choir of Brno, Odense Symphony Orchestra; Paul Mann. SACD hybrid.
