Description: This full-length (136 min.) operetta dates from 1876 and is set near Odessa during the Crimean War. The breeches role for the mezzo may have served as a partial inspiration for Strauss and Hofmannsthal's Rosenkavalier, as well as ensuring the work's eclipse from the early 20th century on when such things went out of fashion. Russian soldiers, Turks and a harem supply all manner of farcical and colorful material for Suppé's style, aptly described in the notes as combining "Viennese waltz mirth and pleasantly varied Offenbach esprit" with "the lyrical bel canto and the fiery temperament of the Italian opera buffa." 2 CDs. No libretto. Stephanie Houtzeel (mezzo), Steven Scheschareg (baritone), Zora Antonic (soprano), Christian Bauer (tenor), Bernhard Adler (bass-baritone), Chorus of the Bad Ischl Léhar Festival; Vinzenz Praxmarer.
