Description: The only recording of Rootham's only completed symphony (1932) is a must-have for all collectors of British symphonies. It's one of the more bustling and vigorous, optmistic minor-key works you'll ever hear, especially in its outer movements which one British reviewer points out have something in common with Bliss' Color Symphony. One might hear echoes of Holst and Vaughan Williams too, which point to Rootham's originality in blending what, at that time, was modernity with the English symphonic tradition. The two 15-minute tone-poems are well worth having as well - Bantock's more conservative one in the Germanic tradition and Holbrooke's similarly conservative piece which is thematically associated with one of his three operas derived from Welsh legend. Philharmonia Orchestra; Nicholas Braithwaite.
