Description: Wessmann's unassuming and attractive concerto is cast in a conventional three-movement form, tonal and overlain with a vaguely jazzy or bluesy inflection to the harmony. Bystöm's 'Delusions' takes its title from a novel by Swedish novelist Hjalmar Söderberg, and bears some relationship to the novel's material and protagonist. It is divided into five sections of distinct character which seem to suggest moods and events in a narrative, though the work is not programmatic. Some 'atmospheric' effects aside, the music is plainly tonally functional, with a strongly ingrained lyricism especially in the solo part. Janson's Norwegian Dance is hugely enjoyable - not especially Norwegian-sounding, and only tangentially dance-like, though ghostly echoes of things that obviously were waltzes, folk-dances, fragments of Grieg, parts of Baroque suites and the like appear from time to time. Composed mostly of overlapping gestures rather than themes as such, and deliberately tonal, the piece is as appealing as it is odd. Lindberg's piece also appears not entirely serious, a lively romp through various styles with portentous interjections that seem to have wandered in from another type of piece altogether - something big and post-Sibelian - then settling back into being jazzy, with touches of Shostakovichian irony.
