Description: Langgaard's odd little piece, just over nine minutes long, a wistful pastiche-like look back at late Romanticism dates from 1943-44 and was previously available only in the mono 1968 recording on Danacord's multiple-disc collection of Danish violin concertos we offered again last month. We had a new recording of the Lange-Müller, a 1902 work - sunny, vernal and lyrical in a loosely rhapsodic structure - in February of last year (also on Danacord). The Gade (1880) is rare, its only previous CD recording on BIS from 14 years ago, oddly coupled with an Ole Schmidt symphony. Unlike its companions here, this is a full-fledged Romantic concerto firmly focused on the soloist and, like his symphonies, floating between Mendelssohn and Brahms in style. Christina Åstrand (violin), Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra; John Storgårds. SACD hybrid.
