Description: The boisterous and colorful Punch, from 1947, and the much longer (33 minutes) Harlequin (commissioned for the 1951 Festival of Britain), a more serious, darker and often poignant Adam Zero-like tale of the cycle of life only portrayed here through Harlequin, Colombine and Pierrot, are opposites on the ballet spectrum. The 1954 concerto is notable for its unaccompanied second movement which, along with the reflective, bittersweet and romantic slow movement, make for the quite center of a work, framed by brasher, busier and harsher outer fast movements. Another meaty and satisfying release in this Arnell series. Lorraine McAslan (violin), BBC Concert Orchestra; Martin Yates.
