Description: The large-scale concerto (in nine movements, just under an hour) is an exuberant, high-energy exhibition of compositional virtuosity. Despite excursions into various kinds of dissonant modernism, and occasional passages organized in a serial manner, there is no question of the tonal basis for the work as a whole, and the composer seems most in his element in a big-boned, full-blooded ostinato-driven idiom familiar from the Scandinavian symphonists of previous generations, from Rosenberg and Sallinen through Segerstam. Along the way we also encounter nods to Busoni, Messiaen, Saint-Saëns, Liszt, minimalism, and who knows what else besides and sometimes Grand Romanticism tips over into a Hollywood pastiche of itself. Nevertheless, despite these self-consciously eclectic elements, the work forms a cohesive, virtuosically exhilarating whole. The quarter-hour Sinfonietta is a furious orchestral whirlwind, fiery and relentlessly agitated and vigorous throughout. Henri Sigfridsson (piano), Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra; John Storgårds.
