Description: A grand Father Willis/Harrison & Harrison organ in the middle of the Cotswolds is the instrument for this recital of music by Gloucestershire composers: a very Elgarian sonata from 1913 by the obscure Lyon, the very rare (and perhaps only recorded once before) Howell's sonata of 1911 with its modernistic French touches and only edited and published in 1991, Steel's further Gallic-colored Variations which are modeled on similar improvisations by Pierre Cochereau and use a similar chromatic, occasionally atonal language against a resolutely tonal background and, going back in time, the quiet little Elegy and good-natured, nine-minute Concert Fantasia, round off a thoroughly entertaining recital. Anthony Hammond (organ of Cirencester Parish Church).
