JAMES AIKMAN (b.1959): Violin Concerto "Lines in Motion", Saxophone Concerto, Ania's Song for String Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 09N082
Description: Aikman's style is accessible and strongly tonal, drawing on a wide range of stylistic influences. The violin concerto begins with a supple and intricate prelude, prefacing a passionate and melodic fantasia, with dance episodes and impressionistic shimmer. The finale is a propulsive toccata with perpetuum mobile fireworks from the soloist. The saxophone concerto alludes to the sensuous smokiness of the solo instrument's jazz heritage, alongside a late-romantic lushness of texture and harmony. The central movement has an appealing process-music momentum accompanying the saxophone's plangent melody. Ania's Song is a gently wistful, reflective and noble adagio in rich, warm textures. Charles Wetherbee (violin), Taimur Sullivan (sax), St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra; Vladimir Lande.
