DOMENICO SCARLATTI (1685-1757): La Dirindina (Brian Shircliffe [baritone], Jamie Barton [mezzo], Joseph Gaines [tenor]), Pur nel sonno (Céline Ricci [soprano]), Sonatas in G Minor, K.88 and in G, K.91.

Label: Sono Luminus
Description: One of the younger Scarlatti's early stage works, La Dirindina is an intermezzo designed to be performed between the acts of his opera seria Ambleto in 1715 (it was banned because of vulgar sexual innuendo!). Two keyboard sonatas, arranged for mandolin and harpsichord make for interludes during and after La Dirindina, introducing the cantata Pur nel sonno, a pastoral piece with whose conventions you are, I'm sure, all too familiar. For those of you who have the capability to use it, there's a Blu-ray disc with 7.1 and 5.1 DTS surround versions of the recording (and, oddly, a plain old 2.0 PCM stereo one too). Italian-English libretto. Ars Lyrica Houston; Matthew Dirst.
