Description: For a guy who lived as long as Rosenthal (known primarily as a conductor), it's odd that these, his entire catalogue of piano compositions, date from 1924-34. This means Paris of the inter-war years, which means that they are all in the general mood of Les Six and Satie and the neo-classicism of the Stravinsky of that period although there are moments of poetic quite and sentiment and a Romantic Fauréan Nocturne in the 1927 Sérénade. But you'll have the most fun with Les Petits Métiers ("The Small Trades" of 1934), which colorfully depict a blacksmith, a barber, a pastry seller, a telegraphist, a knife-grinder, nanny, postman, herbalist, puppeteer and night watchman. Stéphane Lemelin (piano).
