STEPHEN WHITTINGTON (b.1953): Music for Airport Furniture.
Catalogue Number: 09P065
Label: Cold Blue
Description: This 22-minute CD single may recall Brian Eno's Music for Airports of 1978 but is, in fact, quite different in that it uses only the sounds made be real people playing real instruments. The composer's idea was to evoke the sense of loneliness, boredom and apprehension of waiting for your flight to be called in the bland, desolate space of the modern airport. The textures are smooth and luxurious, minimalist but not numbingly so, and I can say that the music really does evoke a sense of resigned sadness. Zephyr Quartet.
