Description: Stanford's concerto was left in piano score when he finished it in 1918, a sign that he recognized at the end of the war that his music was of the past. Its first movement is full of Irish characteristics and the dramatic finale full of virtuosic demands and striking harmonic progressions while the middle movement's sense of loss and resignation is palpable. Milford's big, 40-minute concerto dates from 1937, a period when his interest in English folk song was particularly stimulated by his two best friends, Finzi and Vaughan Williams and you might be forgiven for thinking that this is a newly discovered work by the latter - it's that good! Rupert Marshall-Luck (violin), BBC Concert Orchestra; Owain Arwel Hughes.
