Description: A composer drawn to sonic invention, much given to exploring the potential for novel sounds derived from conventional instruments, Borup-Jorgensen has a natural affinity with the vast array of timbres and techniques available from the modern percussion battery. The large percussion duo La Primavera and Solo explore these possibilities the most extensively, but percussion takes centre stage in all these pieces, creating the unusual impression of percusion soloist with accompaniment by other instruments, rather than the other way around. The works are largely structured according to timbral relationships - for instance, in La Primavera it is the interplay between episodes of metallic sounds, unpitched instruments and pitched ones that give the piece its shape, not rhythmic elements or thematic material, and this gives the impression of a free, organic form. The partial exception to this is the early Music for Percussion + Viola, which employs more conventional relationships between pulse and melody. * - World Premiere Recordings.
