Description: This 1784 tragédie lyrique caused a scandal when, six days after its very successful premiere under the name of Gluck, it was revealed that Gluck’s student Salieri had written the entire thing. And a great young composer had arrived and another page in operatic history turned as the use of a large orchestra with trombones and timpani, large choruses integrated into the action, daring harmonies and heroism in gesture took the Gluckian example a stage further. Yes, it’s appeared on CD before (three times) but this is the first on period instruments and in the luxurious Ediciones Singulares presentation. 2 CDs + book. French-English libretto. Judith van Wanroij, Katia Velletaz (sopranos), Philippe Talbot (tenor), Tassis Christoyannis, Thomas Dolié (baritones), Les Chantres du Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, Les Talens Lyrique; Christophe Rousset.
