Description: This fabulous find for very late-Romantic repertoire collectors was sponsored by the Vienna University for Music and the Performing Arts where Walter’s papers and manuscripts were donated by his widow. The 1904 quintet leans more toward Mahler and Brahms, its textures being predominantly clear and uncongested, its melodies attractive and its mien relaxed and sunny but the sonata, Walter’s last chamber work is darker, more emotioanlly fraught, on the edge of Expressionism and finds its companions in Schreker, Zemlinsky and pre-atonal Schoenberg.
