Description: If there are people out there who, like me, have been waiting (im)patiently 25 years now for a new Lachner symphony recording, the Third Symphony (1835) is everything you had wished and hoped it could be. A 48-minute work in four movements, it is constructed by placing large thematic blocks one after the other which have thematic relationships but which do not develop from each other - like Bruckner but without Bruckner’s rigor. So what you have here is a missing link between the Schubert Ninth and Bruckner, played for all it’s worth by this crack Taiwanese orchestra, blowing away the rehearse-and-record feel of the two 1990s Marco Polo Lachner symphony releases of Nos. 5 and 8. Evergreen Symphony Orchestra; Gernot Schmalfuss.
