JOHN JOUBERT (b.1927): Symphony No. 3 “on themes from the opera ‘Jane Eyre’”, Op. 178, Piano Concerto, Op. 25.
Catalogue Number: 09U009
Description: The commission for the 1958 piano concerto was a direct result of the pianist having heard a performance of Joubert’s First Symphony (08M010). More of a sinfonia concertante in its soloist’s integration with the orchestra, although there are oppoutunities for bold rhetorical passagework for him, the outer movements have a rhythmic and dynamic energy and a contrasting slow movement brings a lyrical contrast. The source of the 2014-17 symphony’s themes is Joubert’s opera which was finished in 1997 (04S062 in April of last year). Since in the Records International solar system orchestral collectors and opera collectors inhabit different planets, the former get to hear the fine, dramatic and psychologivally acute score for themselves in this five-movement work. The opera’s five orchestral interludes are not just stitched together but provide the thematic material which is the recomposed in symphonic form. For those familiar with the novel, if not the opera, the movement titles are place names where the stage action was set. Martin Jones (piano), BBC National Orchestra of Wales; William Boughton.
