Description: Conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich from 1903 to 1949, Andreae was among the pioneers of Bruckner recording (he studied conducting at Cologne under Franz W├╝llner, who managed to be a friend of Brahms and an admirer and conductor of Wagner) but, like many musicians of his generation, considered himself equally a composer. The Op. 1 (1901) cleaves unto Brahms rather than, say, Liszt or Reger, and is full of attractive melodies. Dating from 1914, the second trio adds a fourth movement scherzo and shows his language metamorphosing into a mixture of French Impressionism and Germanic seriousness - not unlike that of Magnard. Locrian Ensemble.
