Description: An American commission for which Penderecki originally planned a shorter, capriccio-like work, this work was expanded into a 33-minute single-movement concerto (or Sinfonia concertante as the composer also calls it) when Sept. 11 intervened and he felt the need to address weightier issues. Penderecki's late, neo-Romantic phase is well known by now and this work will recall some of Shostakovich's war music in its barbaric, rhythmically taut, ostinato-driven episodes which, however, are interrupted three times by chorale-like passages of varying types of quiet and beauty before a fourth appearance brings the work to a towering and affirmative conclusion. The piano is used almost exclusively as a percussion instrument while, especially in the hectic and threatening episodes, Penderecki applies some of his early-period sonorism with a telling effect. Beata Bilinska (piano), Patrycja Piekutowska (violin), National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra Katowice; Krzysztof Penderecki.
