Description: Bolcom worked in many styles over the course of the 38 years which these complete violin works span. The 18-year-old's first sonata from 1956 is what you'd expect from an American working in the American 20th century tradition but the Pastorale of 1962 is quite atonal and dissonant and there is an eclectic mixture of dissonance, complexity and disarming simplicity in Fancy Tales (1972) and the Duo Fantasy of the following year before Bolcom settles more or less into a more classical style of writing with the approachable second and third sonatas (1978 and 1992 and both of which have movements whose tunes or motives you'll have a hard time getting out of your mind) with the Fourth of 1994 seeming coming full circle in terms of approachability and direct communication. 2 CDs. Philip Ficsor (violin), Constantine Finehouse (piano).
