Description: Both works here explore metaphysical concepts of time and eternity, being and nothingness; the one in terms of abstract space; the other in relation to the very specific imagery of the Christian Passion. Brass' music is far from abstract, though, despite its complexity and the range of techniques employed. Certain repetitive structures anchor the music in memory, while the interplay of dramatically contrasting material lends the pieces a narrative contour which can be clearly followed. Even empty spaces between notes seem charged with significance (as in Feldman, a major influence). Unlike Feldman, though, Brass also permits himself outbursts of vehement expressionism, in which tumultuous Lachenmann-like orchestral textures of great complexity explode and reverberate though the timeless continuum. This is not 'easy' music, and it does not deal with 'easy' subjects, but its impact and dramatic power are unmistakable.
