Description: A common factor in these works is a sense of temporal plasticity derived from musics of the East but rather different from the way time is customarily subdivided in western music. Composed for the western concert flute, the pieces explore some extended playing techniques of the western avant-garde, though not to any extreme extent; in general, the composer's strong identification with his native country and culture is expressed through the philosophical ideas behind the pieces rather than in any explicitly Japanese-sounding motifs or inflections in the music itself. The two pieces for two players (2 flutes, and in the case of Interpenetration II, two percussionists with no flutes in evidence whatsoever) most clearly demonstrate the composer's attempts to escape rigid time divisions, by dividing material in different meters between the two soloists, with serial pitch determination but chance operations governing the relationship between parts in tempo and relative duration, onset and release. Márton Végh, Anita Unyi (flutes), Richard Armbruster, Ronald Lück (percussion).
