Description: Arutiunian wrote his concerto in 1992 and it has the usual colorful and exotic flavor one associates with his music. Lundquist's is from 1978 and its title has a conservationist motivation behind it (as we all still wait for conservation to really begin happening...); although an earnest work, its language is predominantly tonal and, like the other composers here, he gives the soloist much legato and cantabile material. Williams also indulges some of his other pet orchestral sections in his 1985 concerto: there are prominent parts for horn quartet, trumpets and flute and English horn. The idiom is modern yet tonal (yes, a few places occur which sound like his film music). Øystein Baadsvik (tuba), Singapore Symphony Orchestra; Anne Manson.
