JOLY BRAGA SANTOS (1924-1988): Piano Quartet, Op. 26, Piano Trio, Op. 58, String Sextet, Op. 59.

Description: Works from two of the composer's three distinct stylistic periods: the 1957 quartet is warmly Romantic while the other two from 1985 and 1986 are in his highly chromatic late style which produces a marked sense of dramatic tension, both works with their share of slow, dolorous movements with vaguely threatening ostinati running like a nervous heartbeat below the music's uneasy surface.
