Description: Arutiunian's popular concerto, with its Khachaturian-like Armenian color and lively tunefulness sounds very well in this wind band arrangement, with a cadenza by the present soloist. Linkola's two concerti have both been adapted for symphonic wind band, as performed here; the second was originally for strings. The first movement is busy and virtuosic, the second a wistful ballade, and the finale has the character of a lighthearted Shostakovich march from a film score. The trumpet solo is active and energetic throughout. The first concerto begins mysteriously and rhapsodically, developing along neo-impressionistic lines in the first movement and Busonian harmonic ambiguity in the second before arriving at an energetic finale which combines elements of big band and military band styles. Linkola's eclectic style remains firmly grounded in tonality throughout. Jouko Harjanne (trumpet), The Guards' Band; Kaartin Soittokunta.
