Description: This series started first but will finish second to Hyperion's. This release has the same coupling as the March 2008 Hyperion volume in their Spohr cycle except for the five-minute overture to a stage play from 1838, the year after the Fifth Symphony. The more you hear Spohr's symphonies, the more they seem to be really special. And the highly unusual, quasi-tone poem format of the Fourth gets newer and newer the more times you hear it. Love that secondary theme in the first movement made up entirely of the calls of the nightingale, quail and cuckoo! North German Radio Philhamonic Hannover; Howard Griffiths.
