Description: The almost obsolete genre of the Notturno made a late appearance with Ries' pair from 1834 and 1836. The former is a 15-minute work in five movements, a simple gift to a friend, tuneful and unpretentious while the latter, in four movements and almost 25 minutes, clearly draws on the tradition in which Mozart was working with his Serenades, Partitas and Notturni. The version of the latter's Gran Partita recorded here, cut down both in size (only four movements) and instrumentation is interesting for its being the version available for performance from the early 1790s while the version as we know it today only got published in 1803.
