MANUEL PONCE (1882-1948): Piano Concertos No. 1 "Romantico" and No. 2 (Unfinished), Ferial - Divertimento sinfónico, For Solo Piano: Preludios encadenados, 4 danzas mexicanas.
Catalogue Number: 10Q003
Reference: CDS 1102-2
Description: Although only the second piano concerto is listed as a World Premiere Recording, nothing else on this disc is otherwise available on CD. Oddly, only the 14-minute Ferial, from 1940, a depiction of an afternoon fair in a small town, is overtly national in style, dripping with local color. The first concerto (1910-11) possesses a Lisztian thematic integration throughout its three movements but Rachmaninov is the first composer to come to mind in its rich, heart-on-sleeve Romanticism. The Second (1947 and unfinished) has only two complete movements (11 minutes in all) has a Gallic transparency and, in the Largo, delicacy. Live recording of a concert in Dec. 2012; very detailed notes. Rodolfo Ritter (piano), Orquesta Sinfónica de San Luis Potosí; Zaeth Ritter.
