MARIO CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO (1895-1968): Evangélion (The Story of Jesus).
Catalogue Number: 10Q059
Description: Written in 1947, this set of 28 short programmatic pieces divided into four sections (Infancy, Life, Words and Passion) is imagined as a tale of Jesus' life as told to children. Not "to by played by children"; this is music for concert pianists. From The Annunciation and The Nativity to The Last Words and The Resurrection, the music ranges from tender simplicity to deep introspection to outbursts of anger to the horror-film four minutes of Golgotha (On the Way to Calvary). It's all wonderfully effective as piano music but you may find yourself wishing the composer had orchestrated it too. Alessandro Marangoni (piano).
