ALBERTO GINASTERA (1916-1983): Bomarzo.
Catalogue Number: 10S061
Label: Sony Classical
Description: Sony marks Ginastera’s centenary with the first CD release of this 1966 opera which tells the anguished true story of a deformed 16th-century Italian duke who, spurned in love and consumed by jealousy, demanded the creation of a series of fantastical sculptures for his “park of monsters”. The role was created for a young, up-and-coming Spanish tenor named Plácido Domingo. Ginastera’s musical language is based on 12-tone procedures and also makes use of microtones, aleatoric procedures and tone clusters, not easy to absorb but perfect for the libretto’s grotesque aspects and the mixing of dream, fantasy and reality. 2 CDs. No libretto. Salvador Novoa (tenor), Brent Ellis (baritone), Isabel Penagos (soprano). The Opera Society of Washington; Julius Rudel. Original 1968 CBS LP release.
