EINOJUHANI RAUTAVAARA (1928-2016): Fantasia for Violin and Orchestra, KAROL SZYMANOWSKI (1882-1937): Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 35, MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937): Tzigane.
Catalogue Number: 10T068
Description: With the exception of a short orchestral piece, gloriously and sumptuously Romantic like a distillation of these traits in Szymanowski and Ravel, the Fantasia is Rautavaara's last completed work, written for this soloist. This piece likewise occupies a similar world to that of the gorgeous works for voices and orchestra that we welcomed last year, in which the "harmony is rich and very tonal, the orchestration opulent, and everything seems suffused with a warm, autumnal glow." (05R062). The Fantasia is rhapsodic and lyrical, not dark or pessimistic, with at most a restrainedly elegiac mood and with a muted climax of suppressed yet vigorous passion. As such it makes a fitting epitaph for a great, endlessly vital, productive and original composer of great humanity. Anne Akiko Meyers (violin), Philharmonia Orchestra; Kristjan Järvi.
