JOHN JOUBERT (b.1927): Symphony No. 1.
Catalogue Number: 11J014
Description: Written in 1955, before Joubert became acquainted with his most important, life-long influence - Shostakovich - this 31-minute symphony is firmly in the mainstream British 20th century tradition of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Alwyn and Arnell. The first three movements are filled with nervous tension, grim and foreboding, and the finale starts in the same way but ends up building to a resolutely optimistic conclusion. A rare CD single, produced as part of the celebrations of Joubert's 80th birthday and not previously issued (although the booklet tells us nothing of when it was recorded). London Philharmonic Orchestra; Vernon Handley.
