MALCOLM WILLIAMSON (1931-2003): Organ Concerto (Malcolm Williamson [organ of Guildford Cathedral], London Philharmonic Orchestra; Sir Adrian Boult), Piano Concerto No. 3 in E Flat (Williamson [piano], LPO; Leonard Dommett), Sonata for 2 Pianos (Williamson, Richard Rodney Bennett).
Catalogue Number: 11J015
Description: A dissonant and atonal work (Williamson described it as being both modal and serial), the 1961 organ concerto where we seem closer to Boulez and Messiaen (except for the lovely pastoral string episode in the slow movement) than to anything English. The piano concerto of 1962 was vilified both by conservatives for its uncompromising qualities and by avant-garders who felt that is was not uncompromising enough. The seven-minute sonata, written for John Ogdon and Brenda Lucas, is also a tough nut to crack. Collectors of mid-century modernism should not hesitate. Original 1972 and 1975 LP releases.
