Description: A prolific and extraordinarily accomplished organist-composer, much of Sawa's output was for his own instrument, but the fine Mass, based on Gregorian chants and prominently featuring the organ, reveals him as a first-rate composer of liturgical concert music for larger forces. The work is direct and uncomplicated, tonal with the passing dissonances of the Renaissance and traditional church music, and with a certain rhythmic complexity which avoids any sense of foursquare convention in choral writing. The organ pieces include his last work, the splendid Passacaglia, an intense, chromatic work of varied character in 15 variations. The other pieces encompass baroque forms, plainchant, chorales, variations and hymns, and frequently one can detect the composer's quasi-improvisatory gifts - he was a gifted improviser, and this spontaneity of utterance plainly passed into his written compositions investing them with a sense of novelty and instant appeal, though never resorting to superficial effects. Marietta Kruzel-Sosnowska, Leszek Mateusz Gorecki, Michal Slawecki (organ of Holy Trinity Evangelical Augusburg Congregation, Warsaw), Leszek Lorent (timpani), Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University Choir; Kazimierz Szymonik.
