Description: Some collectors may recall Baden from the Aurora series of Norwegian composers released on CD in the 1980s. One of those composers who fell between two stools, his music was considered too harsh and atonal in the 1950s and too conservative and tonal in the 1960s. Getting any kind of performance demanded the production of short scores to kick off concerts and broadcasts, which is why, except for the 1979 piano concerto, everything here is between ten and fifteen minutes in length. The national Norwegian voice is still present in the Pastorale e fuga (1958), written for an amateur orchestra, and in the Fairytale Suite (1960) which uses original themes in folk-style and in the 21 minute piano concerto where it is masterfully assimilated into Baden's personal voice, while elsewhere, a brittle, freely tonal neo-classicism obtains. The 1963 Variazioni are the only work to use twelve-tone methods but even that work had to wait twenty years for a performance.
