Description: Kelterborn's fifteen little musical epigrams traverse a wide territory, from a very Webernian economy to a more post-expressionistic dramatic energy. Despite the extreme contrasts in texture between individual movements, they form a convincing arc as a whole, with a kind of underlying narrative structure. Zimmermann's Présence is an imaginary ballet, layering musical (Strauss, Prokofiev, Stockhausen) and literary (Joyce, Jarry, Cervantes) allusions in a complex, surreal drama which, while deliberately farcical and admitting little in the way of conventional narrative sense, proceeds with a kind of inexorable dramatic logic. Expressive, violent and full of the most extreme contrasts, the music packs an undeniable emotional punch. Absolut Trio.
