Description: These masses are above all profoundly spiritual, liturgical works, intended for church performance, and although certainly suitable for secular listening they avoid any hint of theatricality and represent a return to, or continuation of, tradition stretching back to the Renaissance. The Missa solemnis, with brass accompaniment, is the most clearly derived from Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony, while the Missa Legnicka's organ interludes tend toward Messiaen's æsthetic (though the choral writing remains more traditional). Elsewhere, the traditions of the 19th century revival of church music, texturally rich and romantic in sound, are evident. The a cappella Requiem Mass is especially moving; all three, while breaking no new musical ground whatsoever, occupy an unusual position in contemporary choral music as original devotional works of the highest musical quality. Aneta Lukaszewicz (mezzo), Cardinal Stefan Wyszinski University Choir, Brass Ensemble; Kazimierz Szymonik.
