Description: The ten-minute Poe Fantasie (1929) is a hair-raising evocation which could be called a British Francesca da Rimini. Dating from 1936, the cello concerto's first movement has some of the baleful and foreboding atmosphere of The Pit and the Pendulum but broadens out into a typically (for Holbrooke) Tchaikovskian/ Rachmaninovian exercise in late Romantic melody and orchestral color. The symphony is yet another entry (one of 66 British entries) in the Schubert Centenary Competition of 1928 and uses the now fairly well-known theme from Schubert's sketches for the third movement of the Unfinished in its first movement; the remaining two also admit some Delian impressionism and a certain nationalism of the kind then being produced by Alfvén and Kodály. The six-minute Pandora of 1920 is an orchestral dance of sumptuous splendor which was written for part of a British Ballet Company recital. Over 75 minutes of gorgeously orchestrated late Romanticism will make you hope that more Holbrooke comes our way from this source! Raphael Wallfisch (cello), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra (Pandora, Symphony); George Vass.
