Description: Regular RI collectors won't be surprised at Henryk's younger brother's appearance here since we offered Volume One of his solo piano works in April of 2009. As we said there, his compositions for the instrument were the brilliant, virtuosic and showy salon-style pieces and this concerto, from around 1858, is in the same mould. The orchestra seems to be an inconvenient guest which has to be given something to eat now and then, while the soloist goes of on grandiose, florid flights of Sturm und Drang, broken for a few minutes by a charming, singing slow movement a blaze of Polish bravura in the finale. This is the third recording of the Goetz, a less flamingly virtuosic work than many in this series with melody foremost and the virtuosity more obvious to the pianist than to the casual listener. At 40:48, this is by far the most leisurely recording yet. Volker Banfield's for cpo in 1995 was 38:05 and someday, if I ever have time, I must go back to Michael Ponti's on Vox and find out how his could take only 29:28 (!). Hamish Milne (piano), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; Michal Dworzynski.
