Description: It's not often that one gets a whole disc of Auric orchestral music, so aficionados of Les Six's least-recorded male composer should lap up these 67 minutes of music for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Dating from 1924 and 1926, they provide the music for a Molière comedy (Auric used music he previously composed for a stage version of the play) and for a commentary on the hustle and bustle of everyday life (a telegram delivery guy is the main character of La Pastorale. The music is bright and neo-classical, with some mildly bitonal elements, references to the music hall and to the circus, typically witty and, in Les Fâcheaux, an engaging nod to Lullian orchestration with a passage of heavy percussion and pastoral oboes. Vol. 7 of Hänssler Classic's Les Ballet Russes series but the first with unusual repertoire! Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern; Christoph Poppen.
