Description: The beginning of a short Ben-Haim series brings us his first symphony, begun days before Hitler attacked Poland and finished just after the fall of France. Ben-Haim, of course, had been in Palestine since 1933 but the war is everywhere in the music which begins by borrowing part of Mahler's first theme from his Second Symphony; ensuing themes are in the nature of humn, prayer and dance with the finale a threatening, slowish tarantella which breaks out into a life-affirming Jewish hora. The slow movement uses a traditional Persian Jewish song. the Fanfare (1950) is another hymn, originally written for the IDF's brass band, while the Metamorphoses (1968) is a significant (over 18 minutes) work in its own right, constructed in Chorale-Recitative-Passacaglia-Capriccio-Recitative-Ricercare-Coda form. North German Radio Philharmonic Hannover; Israel Yinon.
